I have been perfecting (and profiting from) this opportunity for almost 2 years now. I have made it so simple that my 65 year old mother can do it. This does not involve any risky investments or speculating (like with some antiques, collectibles and jewelry). We’ll only deal with “time proven” money makers that are in abundance on Craigslist. Most of these “everyday treasures” are common items that can be flipped on Craigslist for fast cash or resold on Ebay for even bigger profits!

You will learn EXACTLY what to look for on Craigslist, EXACTLY what you should pay for it, and EXACTLY what price you should pay for it! And then, if it should be flipped on Craigslist for quick cash, or sold on Ebay for larger profits! Like I said before…there is NO GUESSWORK INVOLVED HERE! Just imagine the excitement of surfing your local Craigslist armed with the knowledge to literally write you own paycheck!

Craigslist can be a great resource for selling items the family no longer uses or finding a treasure you’ve been searching for. Here are a few tips for those who haven’t quite figured out the Craigslist system quite yet – How To Cash In and Make Money On Craigslist:

Never buy or sell anything when you’re home alone. If you have to meet someone when you’re by yourself, try to do it inside a public place where lots of people can see you.

Set a minimum amount for items you’d like to sell. Everyone’s threshold is different in terms of what price we place on time and energy. I don’t list anything that’s not worth at least $15 because it does take work, and I want it to be worth my while.

Consider donating — especially if you have something a charity can really use, such as coats for children in winter.

Check out the competition! Do a search on your local city’s Craigslist page in the category in which you’re selling and look at the price, condition, etc., on similar items. I always price a few dollars less than the lowest price I can find, so that my item is (hopefully) the first to sell.

Don’t get discouraged. Once you’ve posted, it may take a while to get responses. It just depends on how desirable the item is. Often, my items sell on the first day of the posting. Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks. Your post will stay up for more than a month. It’s against the rules to re-post just to get your item back to the top of the list, and other Craigslisters will report you for this.

Beware of anyone who wants you to ship an item or who wants to pay in any way other than cash — read the Craigslist anti-fraud and personal safety tips on the homepage for more thorough info on this. There are some scams out there, particularly involving shipping to another country using a PayPal account with a different confirmed address.

So, you start on the Craigslist homepage. Click on U.S. cities and pick the one closest to you. If you’re selling an item, click on the “For Sale” category that best fits your item. Let’s say I’m selling something in the “baby + kids” category. I’ll click on that. Then I’ll hit “Post” in the upper right hand corner. A column of categories will appear. I’ll click on “baby + kid” again. A form will pop up. Your title should reflect your item clearly, starting with the first word. Let’s say I’m selling a Graco jogging stroller. I might title my post “Jogging Stroller – Graco, like new!” Then fill out your asking price (again, my starting point is 75 percent off retail or $5 less than other posts I can find) and your specific location. You can type in your e-mail and choose to anonymize it, so readers will only see an encoded address. You can also hide your e-mail and choose to include a phone number instead. Personally, I’m more comfortable with the first option. I prefer not to give my number to strangers.

Now on to the description. This is the key to your sale. Put on your marketing hat and sell your item. Here’s an example, for my fictional jogging stroller: “LIKE NEW Graco Jogging stroller in tan check pattern! Less than 3 years old, very gently used. Fabric is clean and ready for your baby. Holds children up to 40 pounds with three-point harness, cup holder, storage basket, and parent tray! Folds easily with one hand.”

You get the idea. Give plenty of information about the condition and specs of the item. At the bottom of the description many people mention that it’s cash only. That way there’s no awkward mention of it later — the buyer should already know.

Hopefully you found a great place in your home or outside to take pictures of your item from several angles. I usually post three pictures in a well-lit environment. Your buyers will want to know exactly what they’re getting before they make the trip. Simply click “Add/Edit Images” and pick the ones you want from your picture file. When the pictures show up, you’re ready to click “continue,” type in a security code and Craigslist will generate an e-mail to you with a link. You must click the link and click “publish” in order to publish your post.

Now you wait. Interested buyers will respond, perhaps asking for more details about your item, or where exactly you’re located. I give cross streets, not an address, so that only serious buyers will come back to set up a time once they know how far they’ll have to drive. You can also set up a safe meeting place. Occasionally someone asks me to lower the price. It’s a personal decision. For my part I won’t usually make a deal until the item’s been listed for a few days, but if someone inquires early on, I’ll write back that if it doesn’t sell for the asking price by Wednesday, let’s say, I’ll let them know.

Next you agree on a meeting time and place. I recommend making this specific. “Between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.” could leave you waiting around for a while. You might ask them to contact you if something else comes up. Again, make sure you’re not alone for any meeting.

There are flakes out there — folks who just never show up. It’s happened to me and it’s never fun. It’s just part of Craigslist. Just move on to the next buyer. Don’t delete your item until it’s been picked up and paid for (to delete, you’ll use the same link Craigslist e-mailed to you to publish your post).

Everyone has something around the house they’d just love to get rid of for a little pocket cash. I like to play a little game in which I only buy non-necessity items with money from things we’ve sold. That way I know we don’t have more coming in than going.

There are also great deals to be found on Craigslist if you want to save money on a purchase. Just do a specific search on your town (or the closest town).

Happy Hunting!

Scam job offers are all over the Internet as creative web scammers are trying to find a way into our lives. Craigslist scammers are especially prevalent because the job posts and listings are free with little or no screening. Millions of people every day are searching job posts online trying to find the perfect job. Craigslist employment scammers usually catch their victims searching for employment who quite often are compromised emotionally and not thinking clearly because of the situation they may find themselves in. These are the people that the scammers prey on. Here are 20 Ways to Identify Fake Job Scams on Craigslist to help you sort your way through the fake job offers.

It has a generic, over-used or vague job title. Admin Assistant or Customer Service Rep are popular ones.

The jobs that indicate that “Telecommuting is Ok”. This attracts many people and gives them more responses.

They fail to list a specific location for the job – i.e. they list no location under the city or area that you are searching.

They list a salary or hourly wage that seems too good to be true or too specific like $13.64 – 34.23 / hour. What the…?

They list it as a government job.

They post a job with a title that doesn’t match the description.

They use strange sentences or misspellings.

A search for that job title in Google – example “Admin Assistant Craigslist” and comes up in many other cities with the exact same job post. Because Craigslist is free, they can easily post the same bogus job post in every city.

If the description has a bunch of exclamation points and promises high income in one week.

If the description boldly states “No Experience Necessary” but has a promise of high pay.

There is no job contact information. A quality job post will tell you who to email or give you a valid company website.

A link that is to a home business or multi-level marketing opportunity website. This isn’t a JOB – but a business venture. If you were looking for a home business opportunity you would have searched that category.

A link that redirects you to another site.

A link that takes you to a job membership site and asks you to register.

A quick response to your email inquiry that tells you they have reviewed your resume when you didn’t even send it.

A quick response to your email inquiry that leads you to another website that promises you more job openings – like government jobs. Click after click – nothing but a time waster…

A response to your email inquiry that asks you to sign up for a web-conferencing service so you can be part of a training call.

A response to your email inquiry with a name and company that does not exist.

A response to your email inquiry from someone in a foreign country looking to hire people in the United States to handle accounts payable or receivables.

The same auto response to all of your emails. There isn’t a real person at the other end of the email account.

Have you ever been scammed by a job listing on Craigslist? Why not leave a response to help out others?

How does one find a job on Craigslist? For many who don’t know, Craigslist is a fantastic source of job listings in a specific demographic or city. Jobs are listed by location and category and one can also post their resume to their local Craigslist site for extra exposure for your job search.

The easiest way to find jobs on Craigslist is to go to the city or state site where you are interested in looking for jobs. You will see a directory of sites on the right side of the original Craigslist page or you can go directly to the list of Craigslist – Cities. Not all cities have a dedicated site for job listing or posting, so if you don’t see your city you can simply use the state or province site.

Once you’ve reached the location you want, either click on the type of job or click on “Jobs” to run a keyword search. Instructions on how to apply for that particular employment opportunity are included in the individual job posting description. Craigslist also has part-time job listings, gigs and a jobs wanted section.

If you’re looking to post a resume on Craigslist, you can follow the same process as finding the ‘Jobs’ listings. Simply find a link that says “Resumes” at the bottom of the list of job listing categories. Click on it and you’ll be able to upload your resume.

Craigslist Job Scam Warning

Please be careful and thoroughly investigate any job opening you find on Craigslist (and other job sites) before you apply. There are many different types of job scams and it’s important to be careful to not be taken advantage of. Please read this article for 20 Ways to Identify Fake Job Scams on Craigslist.

Once upon a time, a guy named Craig started a list to keep his friends abreast of goings-on about San Francisco. Before long, Craigslist had spread like kudzu, opening online communities across the globe and forever changing the way people buy and sell things.

But then, eBay bought a big piece of Craig’s company without his say-so. Then, eBay sued him. Then, attorneys general across the United States were holding up Craigslist as a hotbed of online smut.

So, perhaps not coincidentally, Craig Newmark has decided it’s time for something new: Craigconnects, which he says will help nonprofits build community, improve customer service and better operate in cyberspace.

Newmark calls the site, which went live this month, “the biggest thing in my life,” and he plans to spend the next 20 years figuring it all out.

“I’ve decided to get much louder about good stuff that I know about,” Newmark says, “because there are a lot of good, small nonprofits that need help in specific areas.” He sits on the boards or advisory boards of more than a dozen such agencies that do everything from raise money for schools to support returning U.S. veterans.

Newmark wants to help these and other groups get the word out, possibly with a well-crafted elevator pitch (“I’ve had to suffer through so many bad ones”), or through an online giving campaign, or by getting vetted to prove they’re legitimate. “Then, I hope to get them supporting each other, and I’d like to get more nonprofits involved.”

In fact, Newmark speaks of figuring out how “to support thousands, millions and billions” — ultimately linking up everybody on the planet to bear online witness to good works. He freely admits he’s out of his depth, but then again, that was true when he started Craigslist. He sees the new site as a sort of open beta test for charity.

“In the Craigslist pattern, we listen, and then we respond to people and do better after that,” he said. “Craigslist has gotten together maybe 100 million Americans, and that’s a good start.”

Newmark, who says he plans to stay involved in Craigslist, declined to say whether the company’s legal travails have played a part in his decision. But he notes that he still scrubs in on the site’s customer service efforts, fielding email queries from users and routing them to members of his staff. “It connects me to the grass roots, and that’s valuable,” he says.

One Craigslist watcher offered reserved applause for the fledgling effort, wondering why Newmark’s not putting more of his fortune into it. Forbes last year estimated Newmark’s net worth at $400 million.

“One of the things charities need even more than publicity is money,” said Peter Zollman, a classified advertising expert and founder of Orlando-based AIM Group. “It’s not my place to tell Craig Newmark how to spend his money, but to me personally, it would’ve been more impressive to say, ‘I kicked this off with an $X million donation to each of these charities I believe in.’ ”

Newmark notes that Craigconnects is not incorporated as a grant-making agency; nor is the Craigslist Foundation, which he launched a decade ago to help nonprofits use social media and better work with the government and each other. While he does make cash grants personally, he argues that his celebrity offers a bully pulpit for nonprofits..

Jonathan Zittrain, a Harvard professor and Internet expert, said, “It’s heartening to see Craig put his most valuable asset — his trusted name — behind an effort to help sift good charities from bad ones.”

It was a conversation several months ago with Susan Nesbitt, a consultant and former deputy director of the Craigslist Foundation, that set the wheels in motion for Craigconnects. Newmark asked her to pull together a list of all the nonprofits he was supporting in ways large and small.

“I thought she’d give me 20 or 30; it turned out to be more like 100,” he said. “I thought, ‘That’s my tipping point, I’d better get a team together and do something.’ ”

Although the site is still in its infancy, Newmark envisions donors being able to read testimonials about featured nonprofits, view their ratings on sites like Charity Navigator and Guidestar, and link to their pages on Facebook and Jumo, a philanthropy-themed social network.

For instance, Newmark says, Tuesday was World Water Day, a global awareness effort that grew out of a United Nations environmental conference. Newmark works with three organizations that are tackling different aspects of bringing water and sanitation to the developing world, so he promoted them on Craigconnects, invited them to blog, and is highlighting them on Facebook and Twitter.

The site’s real muscle, he hopes, will be realized when users start utilizing the platform to tout their own causes and weigh in on the performance of various nonprofits.

“By 2030, I think everyone will be connected on the Net,” says Newmark, who’ll turn 60 in 2012. “We’ll all be working on our own ideas for mutual good. And that’s what I what to do with the rest of my life.”

Advertising on Craigslist

Advertising on Craigslist is worthwhile for just about any business offering products or services. Whether these products are offered through ecommerce websites or physical stores, the business owners can see financial gains through advertising on Craigslist. Firstly unlike other advertising opportunities there is very little risk involved in posting on Craigslist. With the exception of job postings and housing postings in specific markets, advertising is free on Craigslist. Users are asked to agree to the terms of service of the community and are expected to follow specific guidelines when posting advertisements but there are no financial obligations to those placing advertisements on Craigslist. This means those who post advertisements do not have to be concerned with whether or not the advertisement they place will meet their expectations in terms of sales generated.

Reaching Potential Customers on Craigslist

Another reason why posting advertisements for products or services on Craigslist is so worthwhile is the likelihood of reaching a large audience of potential customers. A review of the Craigslist fact sheet reveals pertinent information regarding the amount of traffic the website receives. According to this information Craigslist receives approximately four billion page views each month with ten million people using Craigslist each month. From these statistics it is clear that advertisements placed on Craiglist are likely to receive at least some attention from potential clients.

With so many visitors using Craigslist each month the advertising possibilities are limitless, however, there are no guarantee any of these visitors will be interested in your products or services. Like any marketing campaign, your advertisements on Craigslist must be intriguing, informative and in a location where you will reach your target audience.

Finding Your Target Audience on Craigslist

We’ve already discussed the number of visitors using Craigslist each month but the key to taking advantage of these numbers is to target your advertising in a way aimed at reaching your target audience as opposed to a wide audience of individuals who have no specific interest in your products or services. It is much more worthwhile to reach a small audience of those with a keen interest in your products or services than to reach a much larger audience of those who are not interested. Those who have an interest in your products or services are your target audience.

The key to reaching your target audience on Craigslist is placing your advertisement in the most appropriate locations. Craigslist has a specific section for businesses to advertise their services. This section is broken down into a number of categories. Those who are in the business of computer repair would be wise to place their advertisement in the computer section as opposed to the automotive section because individuals looking for computer help will naturally migrate to the computer section. It may sometimes be appropriate to place an advertisement in more than one section. This is acceptable as long as it does not cross the line to spamming the section.

If there is not a specific section for the products or services offered by your business there are a couple of options. Business owners can place an advertisement in the section for small business advertisements where it might be found by those doing a search in this section. Alternately the business owner can contact Craigslist to suggest the addition of a new category. They might be willing to oblige if they believe this category warrants an addition.

The Difference between Advertising and Spamming

Advertising on Craigslist is one thing but spamming is quite another. Placing an advertisement in an appropriate section of Craigslist is acceptable; however, placing the same advertisement in nearly every section of Craigslist websites for a number of different geographical regions is considered spam. Spam is ineffective for a number of reasons. First of all potential customers who see a particular advertisement in a number of different locations are likely to recognize the spamming techniques and be less inclined to patronize this business. Also, if Craigslist detects the practice of spamming they may delete all of the postings and could potentially ban advertisements from the individual in the future.

A 47-year-old Burnaby man was charged Wednesday with forcing women to work as prostitutes after a two-year human trafficking investigation, the RCMP said.

Jian Feng “Michael” Li appeared in Vancouver Provincial Court today to face one count of living off the avails of prostitution and four counts of keeping a common bawdy house. He was released and is scheduled to next appear in court Nov. 10.

The RCMP allege Li sponsored up to nine women from Hong Kong who were forced to work in the sex trade when they came to Canada. Investigators also allege Li was using Craigslist to advertise four brothels that he was running in Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam and Richmond.

Investigators believe Li was making up to $40,000 dollars a week with the women under his control.

Const. Michael McLaughlin said RCMP were unable to lay human trafficking charges because of they had problems with language barriers, the reluctance of some victims and witnesses to testify and the fact that the victims did not stay in Canada.

“Human trafficking is a very specific charge. It requires a very committed witness. The victims are not from Canada and they don’t have a tradition of dealing with the police. Often they go home. It was difficult to get that level of witness involvement needed.”

Police haven’t ruled out that other people were involved in the case, but McLaughlin said no further charges were expected.

Warrants were executed last year to search three apartments and one house in four suburban areas, including the 10000- block of 148th St. in Surrey, the 4200-block of Dawson St. in Burnaby, the 500-block of Blue Mountain St. in Coquitlam and the 8800-block of Lansdowne Rd. in Richmond.

“We made the arrest very victim focused. We knew that they would likely be uncomfortable with the police. So when we went in with warrants, we did have OCTIP [the B.C. Office to Combat Trafficking in Persons] with us,” said McLaughlin.

“We went in and OCTIP was there with translators, food and even money so that the women understood that this was not about prosecuting them.”

He said Li is known to police but does not have an extensive record.

McLaughlin called the case “a sad example of the abuse and exploitation of women.”

North Vancouver RCMP are warning the public about two more Craigslist scams, after one local landlord was recently bilked out of almost $6,000.

Both scams involve the fraudsters getting unwitting victims to send them money over a wire transfer service.

In one case, a local landlord was contacted by a man posing as an overseas doctor who was moving to Canada and needed an apartment to rent. The fictitious doctor wired a check through Western Union to rent the suite for a year, said Cpl. Peter DeVries, spokesman for the local detachment. Once the check cleared the landlord’s bank, which typically takes anywhere from three to seven business days, the doctor claimed a family emergency, and said he needed to back out of the deal. He requested the landlord send most of the money back, which the landlord did.

A short time later, however, his bank told the landlord that the cheque was fraudulent, said DeVries. Confirmation of that can take the bank up to 21 days. Since the landlord had deposited the fraudulent check, he was left responsible for repayment of the loss.

In another case, a North Vancouver resident responded to a Craigslist post advertising an apartment for rent. The owner claimed he was overseas and asked for advance payment through a Western Union money transfer, said DeVries. Fortunately, the potential renter was suspicious, and contacted the North Vancouver RCMP, who were able to confirm the ad was a scam.

Rental scams have been especially common in the past month, said Const. Seema Gabi of the North Vancouver detachment’s economic crime unit. Gabi said she’s heard of two cases in the past month where people posing as landlords temporarily out of the country offered to courier keys to prospective tenants — in exchange for one month’s rent. Luckily the potential tenants became suspicious and didn’t go through with the deal.

Scams involving people who offer to buy used Blackberries or iPads with counterfeit bills have also surfaced recently, she said. By the time the fakes are discovered “the person’s gone,” she said.

To avoid being ripped off, police warn residents doing business on Craigslist and other similar sites to never make a wire transfer payment. Wire transfers are virtually untraceable, said DeVries. Similarly, police warn to never accept a cashier’s cheque as payment. Those cheques are often frauds.

Police also warn consumers to avoid any transaction where the seller wants to use an online “escrow service” as those typically turn out to be scams.

But the basic warning on fraud remains the same, said Gabi — If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Embattled online classified service Craigslist apparently made a change to its website early Saturday, censoring its adult services section.

The section that usually reads “adult services” was replaced by the word “censored.”

It was not immediately clear whether Craigslist removed the adult services and replaced them with the “censored” section that had a link that was not active. But for users who accessed the account outside the U.S., the erotic services link was still active.

Craigslist representatives were not immediately available for comment.

The website has been under fire for allegations that it promotes prostitution.

Last week, attorneys general in 17 states banded together to urge Craigslist to discontinue its adult services.

“The increasingly sharp public criticism of Craigslist’s Adult Services section reflects a growing recognition that ads for prostitution — including ads trafficking children — are rampant on it,” the attorneys general said in a Tuesday letter to Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster and Founder Craig Newmark.

A Craigslist spokeswoman said at the time that the site agreed with at least some of the letter.

“We strongly support the attorneys general desire to end trafficking in children and women, through the Internet or by any other means,” said Susan MacTavish Best, who handles press inquiries for Craigslist.

“We hope to work closely with them, as we are with experts at nonprofits and in law enforcement, to prevent misuse of our site in facilitation of trafficking, and to combat such crimes wherever they appear, online or offline.”

In their letter, the attorneys general highlighted an open letter, which appeared as a Washington Post ad, in which two girls said they were sold for sex on Craigslist.

When the ad came out, Buckmaster wrote a blog post in response that said, “Craigslist is anxious to know that the perpetrators in these girls’ cases are behind bars.”

The letter also highlighted a report in May by CNN’s Amber Lyon, who posted a fake ad for a girl’s services in the adult section. She received 15 calls soliciting sex in three hours.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who in recent years has been pushing for Craigslist to clean up its adult section and spearheaded the letter from the attorneys general, said the group was trying to reach Craigslist representatives to figure out the recent change to the website.

Earlier this month, Lyon interviewed a woman named “Jessica” who sells sex on Craigslist. The woman said a Craigslist ad was “the fastest, quickest way you’re for sure going to see somebody that day.”

In a later blog, Buckmaster said Craigslist implemented manual screening of adult services ads in May 2009.

“Since that time, before being posted each individual ad is reviewed by an attorney.”

He said the attorneys are trained to enforce Craigslist’s posting guidelines, “which are stricter than those typically used by yellow pages, newspapers, or any other company that we are aware of.”

Attorneys general from Arkansas, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia made the request a week after accused “Craigslist killer” Philip Markoff committed suicide in jail.

Markoff was charged with the April 2009 killing of Julissa Brisman. Boston Police said that Brisman, a model, advertised as a masseuse on Craigslist, and Markoff might have met her through the website.

In 2008, under pressure from state prosecutors, the website raised the fees for posting adult services ads. In 2009, it started donating portions of the money generated by adult ads to charity.

A CNN investigation of Craigslist’s adult services section, which replaced “erotic services ads” two years ago, counted more than 7,000 ads in a single day.

Many offered thinly veiled “services” for anything from $50 for a half-hour to $400 an hour.
