There are many questions that people ask about Craigslist and one that is at the top of that list is “Does it cost to place an ad on Craigslist?” Well, the initial and short answer is that there are no fees to post your ads in Craigslist, but there are a few sections on the site that do charge a fee to list your advertisements. These sections on Craigslist that charge small fee for service are as follows:
1. Job posts in the San Francisco Bay Area
* The fee for posting a job in the SF Bay Area is $75. This fee pays for one job in one category. (One job posted in two different categories would cost $150.)
2. Job posts in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Orange County, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle, South Florida, and Washington DC
* The fee for posting a job in these cities is $25. This fee pays for one job in one category. (One job posted in two different categories would cost $50.)
3. Brokered apartment rental listings in New York
* The fee for posting a brokered apartment rental in New York City is $10.
4. Posts in adult services and therapeutic services on craigslist sites in the United States.
* The fee for posting ads in these categories is $10. Live approved ads can be re-posted for $5.
There are two options for purchasing paid posts:
- post ads individually and pay by credit card for each ad
- buy a block of ads and pay for the block with a check
So, the short answer to “does it cost to place and ad on Craigslist?” is no – but there are exceptions. I hope this helps you out a bit. Leave a comment if you find out anything new that we need to know about.

The Advanced Interactive Media (AIM) Group is out with their annual report on Craigslist and estimates that the classified listing site will generate $122 million in revenue in 2010.
More than half of that revenue comes from recruitment advertising, but 30% of it comes from Craigslist’s (
) adult services ads. By the AIM Group’s estimation, Craigslist’s adult services — formerly known as “erotic services” — will funnel in more than $36 million in revenue for 2010.
The Classified Intelligence Report also finds that Craigslist stands to take home anywhere from $88 to $99 million in profit, which means the company could see nearly 80% of revenue as profits. Plus, AIM Group founder Peter M. Zollman purports that, “Per employee, it generates more than $4 million in revenue and profits of $2.9 million to $3.2 million.” (more…)
